It is not uncommon for an emerging artist to be inspired by an established practitioner and perhaps allude to or imitate them in homage. It is less usual for this interaction to become the basis of a significant project and even less so for it to result in a collaboration as compelling as that of Cat Auburn and Fiona Pardington’s ’Looking Up to You’.
The works in ’Looking Up to You’ include sculptural allusions to Pardington’s paintings and photographic still lifes, as well as a number of references to the artist’s own past work. For example, Auburn’s sculptural fungus in Chalfont Candyman references a fungus in Pardington’s Champignon Barla series.
The photographic images in the exhibition are taken by Mount Auburn’s Media and Imaging Coordinator, Jennifer Johnston, who has spent more than a decade recording the Cemetery’s funerary art, landscape design, and interplay between nature and human-made objects. Her photographs illustrate numerous publications and have been exhibited internationally.
