The Families Commission has zero tolerance for child abuse. The safety of the child must be paramount and a child-centred approach is essential. However, we believe issues facing children must be seen within the context of their families and whānau. The adult issues affecting children also need to be addressed.

We believe partnering with iwi and Māori would be a powerful approach for the government to take at this time. The Green Paper also needs to look at longer-term prevention of child abuse and neglect.

The Green Paper on Vulnerable Children was a discussion paper launched by the government to give people and communities a say on how New Zealand can better protect abused, neglected and disadvantaged children.
